Watch those Words
Proverbs 6:1-5
Psalm 34:11-13 “Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.”
Words are powerful for at least three reasons.
- Words are everywhere. “By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
- Words penetrate within. Proverbs 12:18: “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
- Words spread far and wide. “A scoundrel plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.”
Wrong uses of the tongue:
- Gossip. Proverbs 20:19: “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.”
- Angry words. Proverbs 29:22: “An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered man commits many sins.”
- Lying. Proverbs 12:19: “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.”
- Flattery. “Whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet” (29:5).
- Impulsive speech. Proverbs 29:20: “Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”
Our speech is compared to…
- Refreshing water. Proverbs 10:11: “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life.”
- Tasty food. Proverbs 16:24: “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
- Expensive jewelry. Proverbs 25:11-12: “A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear.”
Ten Tongue tamers:
- Think more. Proverbs 15:28, “The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.”
- Talk less. Proverbs 10:19 “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.”
- Listen better. Proverbs 15:31: “He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.”
19:20: “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.”
18:13: “He who answers before listening—that is his folly and shame.”
- Encourage others. 15:4: “The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life.”
- Speak gently. Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Proverbs 25:15: “Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.”
- Cut others slack. 12:16: “A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.”
Proverbs 19:11: “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”
17:9: “He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”
- Avoid gossip. Proverbs 11:13: “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.”
16:28: “A gossip separates close friends.”
- Tell the truth. Proverbs 12:17: “A truthful witness gives honest testimony but a false witness tells lies.”
Proverbs 16:13: “Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value a man who speaks the truth.”
- Stop boasting. Proverbs 25:27: “It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor.”
- Don’t quarrel. Proverbs 17:14: “Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.”
20:3: “It is to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.”

The compelling problem of Anger
all a____________ is not sin
Anger is an e_________– and all e________ are from God
If all of our anger were grief over s_____, this emotion would never displease God.
Proverbs 22:24-25 “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.”
Two different ways that this emotion is revealed
First of all we have the guy who “I____________”
Proverbs 12:16 says, “a fools wrath is presently known”.
The second type is the “h___ _____________” man
–he that is soon angry deals foolishly
Where does anger come from?
– P_____ is the cause of our anger.
Prov 25:28 states, “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.”
Results of anger
–Proverbs 27:3-4 “a stone is heavy, and the sand weighty, but a fool’s wrath is h__________ than them both. Wrath is cruel, and anger outrageous…
–Proverbs 29:22, “an angry man stirreth up s_____, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
–15:18 “a W___________ man stirreth up strife…”;
–19:19, “a man of great wrath shall suffer p__________”
–30:33 “surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood; so the forcing of wrath bringeth strife!”
A couple of things that naturally follow the angry person –
–the fact of s__________.
–he abounds in t______________
–the g___________ conscience
–the Divine p___________________
So, how do we deal with anger?
Proverbs 19:11 A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

Hope in the Darkness
I Corinthians 15:1-8
“The Wages of sin is death”. Romans 6:23
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Romans 3:10-12 (ESV)
1 Timothy 1:15 (ESV)
15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
Romans 3:21-25 (NLT)
21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago.
22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
24 Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.
25 For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

- Two words the world Hates:
- S__________________ – that is willingly surrendering our w________ to another.
- C_______________ – that is fulfilling our calling regardless of the c________.
- Salvation although free to everyone came at the high cost of Jesus shedding his blood on the cross for our s________…
- with this salvation God has given us a trust. This trust involves our a______________ and a____________ towards God and other people.
- God does not ask most of us to die for Him…. But He is asking all of us to l________________ for Him!
God says I’m going to provide what is necessary for you, I’m going to make you acceptable in my sight.
But you must recognize that there is an e_____________ that has to take place; your life for my Son’s. You take His life and you trade yours in for it and you can be with me.
God will accept us, but as the Bible puts it, He will only accept us in Christ.
- What I need I can’t provide …. God is going to have to provide it for me.

Wisdom contrasted
Series: Studies in the Proverbs
The primary purpose of Proverbs was to facilitate the “a___________ of wisdom and discipline.”
Wisdom is a matter of h_______ and m_____ – it consists of the proper and diligent handling of our lives, while living in God’s world, all the time living in submission to His will and His Word.
Proverbs 1:7 says that the “fear of the Lord is the b____________ of knowledge…”
A. those who are not increasing in wisdom are called “S_________”…
-1. The verb that is formed from this Hebrew word, means “to d_________, or to s_________”….
–So the person who is “simple” is the kind of person who is easily led astray; gullible, silly.
- a) M________; – he is naive – Proverbs 14:15 and 22:3 “the simple believes everything, but the prudent looks where he is going.” Lazy--- thoughtlessness…
- b) M_________; -- he is willful and irresponsible – Proverbs 1:32 “for the turning away of the simple shall slay them…”
This one whom we are calling simple is no mentally deficient… he is a person whose instability could be rectified But he prefers not to accept the d___________ of wisdom.
A. The second term is; “the F_____”…
–1. The fool is an advanced case of the simple…
–2. three different words are used here in proverbs that the English translates as “fool”:
- a) The first is a term that implies a person who is “d_____, or o______________” (about 50 times)
But remember that the Proverbs has in mind a man’s chosen outlook rather than His m________ equipment or capabilities.
To those who love Him the fool brings sorrow!
- b) The second word that we translate as “fool” is used 19 times
(1) The fool knows no restraint.. 20:3 & 12:16
(2) “Fools mock at making amends for sin…” 14:9
c) The third word that is translated as fool, is used only three times in Proverbs, but it is characterized by the words of P____ 14:1… “the fool has said in his heart, there is no God!”
The sayings of Proverbs are not p________, but they show us, in p________, how life works and how we can work life.
"The remarkable thing about fearing God is that, when you fear God, you fear nothing else; whereas, if you do not fear God, you fear everything else."
Oswald Chambers

Pursuing Wisdom
Proverbs 1; and selected others
a proverb is a s__________ or s__________ that is “instead of many words”
God defines wisdom this way: “The f______ of the Lord – that is wisdom; and to shun e_____ is understanding.” Job 28:28
Lawrence Tooms wrote, “Wisdom is to be found with God and nowhere else. And unless the quest for wisdom brings a man to his knees in awe and reverence, knowing his own helplessness to make himself wise, wisdom remains for him a closed book.”
Proverbs is written with the intent of “a________ wisdom and discipline…”
different expressions that are used to reference to wisdom;
- a) “discipline” or “training” …–Within this idea of discipline is the concept of “c__________”….
- b) “understanding” or “insight”…. This is the ability to d_________ between good and evil, right and wrong….
- c) “prudence” the power of making shrewd and wise p_______.
- d) “Learning” tends to emphasize their ability to a______________ the truth
the costs of wisdom…
–a) We must a_______ our hearts… that is our total beings – to the understanding (or the ability to “discern between”)
–b) We must “c____ after knowledge and understanding
–c) We are to s_________ for wisdom as intently as if it were “a hidden treasure”
four progressing levels of wisdom:
prudence means, “the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of r_________.”
Knowledge is the ability to d_______ between fact and opinion, truth and fiction, and cause and effect.
Discretion is the ability to make a__________ application of the knowledge one possesses.
“the wise” man is someone who has become prudent, knowledgeable, and discretionary on a c____________ basis.
The pinnacle of wisdom is “u__________” life’s deepest mysteries.
In Proverbs 1:7 Solomon himself provides the final thought in his introduction to wisdom:
“ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

The Definition of Partnership

The definition of “partnership”…
- “An arrangement where parties, known as p________, agree to cooperate to advance their m_________ i_________________.”
- the simple meaning of the word is "to have in c____________."
- Philippians 1:18
- “But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached…” that is the “m_____ interest”!
This idea of “p______________” echoes throughout this book
- In 1:27 he admonishes them to “stand firm in ONE spirit contending as ONE man for the faith of the Gospel….”
- In 2:2 He asks them to make his joy full by being like minded having the same love, being ONE in spirit and purpose.
- And in the next verse he instructs them to “Consider others better (or more important) than yourselves.”
- Their attitude (that is all of the church) should be the same as that of Christ Jesus…
- Vs 14, “Do everything without complaining or arguing…”
- 3:17 “Join with others in following my example….
- 4:2…. “Agree with each other” really the whole fourth chapter is demonstrating the reality of partnership with the church and the admonition to have partnership with each other.
- The idea of a “Loyal” yokefellow indicates that the person/ or persons here addressed were “p_______ their s_________ of the load”.
- “I thank my God every time I remember you”…
- We need to apply this to our fellow members… we need to remember to thank God for each other. When we are thankful for each other we are able to o___________ those little things that irritate us. When we give thanks we have trouble f________ s___________ for ourselves.
- “In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership I the gospel from the first day until now…”
- He makes it a habit to pray with joy, because he recognizes their p in the g ! In other words, they all look at the BIG goal… the Gospel!!!!!
- …. “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus”.
- Paul was able to pray for them, and to have joy for their partnership, because he was confident that God was not f____________ with them yet… He was able to give them g________, because he knew that they were a work in progress….
- Why not jump in here with us… and reach for the goal?
