"What's In a Name?"
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus." Matthew 1:23 - 25 ESV
Sometimes when we read the newspaper or a magazine we will run across a name that may cause us to pause and wonder, "what were their parents thinking?" In the Bible we see great thought given to the naming of a child, because a name was thought to convey some character of the individual.
In today's message Pastor Russ Whitaker will look at three individuals and how their name spoke to who they were; Abraham, John the Baptist, and Jesus.

"Tongues of Fire!"
So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Acts 1:6 - 11
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” Acts 2:5 - 13 ESV
Pentecost, fifty days have passed since Jesus died on Golgotha outside the gates of Jerusalem. The disciples have been waiting in Jerusalem as they were commanded by Jesus.
Then a mighty roaring wind comes and the disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to witness to those gathered in the temple.
